V r.1983 – 88 študoval na Št. Konzervatóriu v Košiciach v triede prof. Pavla Takáča. Počas štúdia získal na súťažiach Slov. Konzervatórií viacero ocenení: v r. 1983 1.cenu (1.kategória), v r. 1985 1.cenu (1.kat.) a v r. 1987 2.cenu (2.kat.). VŠMU absolvoval v triede Doc. J. Gašparoviča v r. 1988 - 92. V r. 1989 získal na súťaži Amati Kraslice (ČSFR) 2.cenu, v r.1990 na Interpretačnej súťaži ml. umelcov v Bratislave 3.cenu a v r. 1992 na súťaži Pražská Jar Cenu pre najúspešnejšieho kanditáta z ČSFR. 

V r.1989 - 1990 bol členom Tanečného orchestra Československej televízie (basový trombón) pod taktovkou p. Siloša Pohanku, Bratislavského Big Bandu pod vedením p. Jána Štubniaka (1.trombón), Big Bandu Radio Bratislava (1990 – 1991, 1.trombón) pre ktorý aj komponoval a aranžoval, Bratislavského trombónového kvarteta (1989 – 1998, basový trombón), s ktorým účinkoval vo Viedni, Karlsruhe a iných európskych mestách. Od roku 1992 je členom trombónovej skupiny Slovenskej filharmónie (basový trombón) a členom CZ – SK Big Bandu Matúša Jakabčica, s ktorým sa zúčastnil rôznych jazzových festivalov, ako napr.: Přerov, Hradec Králové, Košice, Prešov, Bratislava, Viedeň. V rokoch 1996 – 2005 príležitosne spolupracoval s Big Bandom Gustava Broma, 2006 až 2013 člen. V súčasnej dobe je aj členom menších kapiel. Basový trombón hrá v Nikistein Jazz Sextete (s Erikom Rotensteinom, Nikolajom Nikitinom, Luboškom Šrámkom, Mariánom Ševčíkom, Vladom Máčajom), Erik Rothenstein Jazz Quintet, Soul for Seven (fusion, pop,...) . V roku 2013 založil Michal Motýľ Tentet, s ktorým nahral CD Sunflowers.


He studied at the Conservatory in Kosice with professor Pavol Takac. During his studies he won the 1st and 2nd prizes at several competitions of Slovakian Conservatories. He graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava where he studied with J. Gasparovic.  He won 2nd prize at the competition Amati Krasica in Czech Republic, 3rd prize at the Competition of Young Artists in Bratislava and he also won the Prize for the Best Candidate from Czechoslovakia  in the competition Prague Spring.

In 1989 - 1990 he was a member of Czechoslovakian TV Dance Orchestra  lead by Silos Pohanka where he played the bass trombone.  He was also the principal trombonist of Bratislava Big Bang lead by Jan Stubniak and a principal trombonist of Radio Bratislava Big Band for which he also composed and arranged. He was a member of Bratislava Trombone Quartet as a bass trombonist.  He performed with this ensemble in Vienna, Karlsruhe and other European cities. From 1992 he performs with Slovak Philharmonics as a bass trombonist and also he is a member of Czechoslovakian Big Band of Matus Jakabcic. With the Czechoslovakian Big Band he participated jazz festivals in various cities, such as: Prerov, Hradec Kralove, Kosice, Presov, Bratislava, Vienna. In 1996 – 2005 he occasionally worked with Big Band of Gustav Brom and became a member of this orchestra as a bass trombonist. Currently he is also a member of smaller ensembles. He is bass trombonist in Nikistein Jazz Sextet (with Erik Rothenstein, Nikolaj Nikitin, Lubos Sramek, Marian Sevcik, Vlado Macaj) Erik Rothenstein Jazz Quintet, Soul for Seven ( fusion, pop,…) In 2013 he established his own ensemble called Michal Motyl Tentet and recorded CD album Sunflowers with his ensemble.
